Griz halt rally by lowly Heat

Iavaroni pleased by way team responds

MIAMI -- The Grizzlies gave themselves a chance to finish with a better record than last season. The Miami Heat locked up the NBA's worst record, and the best chance at winning the draft lottery.

On this night, two negatives added up to a positive in their own way.

With a 96-91 victory over the Heat on Friday night in American Airlines Arena, the Grizzlies matched last season's victory total (22) and satisfied one of a few goals with three games remaining.

"You want to use these games to try to click as much as you can," said Griz forward Hakim Warrick, who along with Kyle Lowry, led the Griz with 17 points. "We're still trying to get better."

Memphis had a 19-point lead sliced to three with 1:36 left but held off Miami with key stops and clutch rebounds down the stretch. Dominating the hustle board is how the Grizzlies initially established command.

The Griz yielded just 37 percent shooting and outscored the Heat, 21-11, in second-chance points.

"I was pleased with the way we responded to their run," Griz head coach Marc Iavaroni said. "The ball went to the right people at the right time."

Rookies Mike Conley and Juan Carlos Navarro each scored 15 points as the Griz had six players score in double figures. Former University of Memphis standout Earl Barron led the Heat with 22 points off the bench.

Grizzlies beginning to hit stride on offense

Offensively speaking, the Grizzlies are starting to make sense.

That is to say they suddenly act and talk as if the art of putting the ball through the rim isn't some ancient Chinese secret.

Over the past two games -- both victories -- the Griz have averaged nearly 119 points on 51-percent shooting.

Their assists are up, and so are the high-percentage shots created by crisper ball movement.

What People Are Saying

Defenders must learn that flying out to contest a Juan Carlos Navarro 3 makes no sense. He'll simply fake you and casually watch you fly by before setting and launching his deadly shot. Better to close out low and fast and make him deal with a player in front of him.
